Looking for an anti-dust mite pillow and stumbled across the Czech manufacturer nanoSPACE? It’s perfectly understandable to feel a bit nervous about the purchase — it’s not exactly a small investment. But we can already tell you this: it’s one that pays off. Read our review, where we put the anti-dust mite pillow without zip for allergy sufferers from nanoSPACE to the test.

You put your own pillowcase on the nanoSPACE anti-dust mite pillow without zip. The pillowcase doesn't need to be anti-dust mite, because the nanofibre membrane inside the pillow is more than enough to keep dust mites at bay.

What is an anti-dust mite pillow without zip for?

An anti-dust mite pillow is designed specifically for people who suffer from a dust mite allergy — a condition characterised primarily by a runny nose, coughing, and breathing difficulties. These pillows are made from materials that resist dust mites, preventing them from getting inside and building up over time.

A zipless anti-dust mite pillow has a fully sealed construction, unlike its zipped counterpart, which reduces the risk of dust mites getting inside to an absolute minimum. There’s simply no opening for them to crawl through.

The main downside of a zipless anti-dust mite pillow, however, is the limited ability to adjust the filling inside. It’s very difficult to change the amount or distribution of filling to suit your personal preferences.

How does the nanoSPACE anti-dust mite pillow without zip work?

The nanoSPACE anti-dust mite pillow without zip contains a layer of nanofibres that stop dust mites from getting inside. The nanofibre membrane is made of extremely thin fibres with gaps so tiny (80–150 nm) that neither the invisible-to-the-naked-eye dust mites (420,000 nm) nor their allergenic droppings (1,000 nm) can pass through.

The nanoSPACE pillow is made up of three layers in total. One side is a polyester microfibre fabric, the middle layer is the nanofibre membrane we just mentioned, and the other side is a polyester knit. The non-woven textile holds the nanofibre membrane firmly in place, effectively blocking dust mites from penetrating the pillow.

The nanoSPACE anti-dust mite pillow without zip is anti-allergenic on its own, so you don’t need to put it inside an anti-dust mite cover or special bedding.

Our verdict on the nanoSPACE anti-dust mite pillow without zip

If you’ve read our previous nanoSPACE reviews, you’ll know we’ve already tested the large pillow, duvet, and anti-dust mite pillowcase. Since we’re very much a “the more pillows the better” household, this time we went for a set of two non-quilted zipless pillows in the 40×40 cm size.

Packaging

The pillows arrived in a dark-blue backpack — or rather a drawstring bag — printed with little cobweb motifs that match the nanoSPACE brand design. It’s hardly the most important thing, but these small details do tell you something about the manufacturer. Plus, the bag will definitely come in handy for something else, so if you do decide to order, make sure you keep it. 😉

The package naturally included information on how the anti-dust mite pillow without zip works, what it’s made of, and how to care for it so it lasts a really long time without losing its effectiveness.

Material quality and stitching

We’re no sewing experts, but we can usually tell when something hasn’t been put together properly. That’s definitely not the case with nanoSPACE pillows. Both pillows match the stated dimensions and there are no stray threads anywhere. We’re confident the same applies to the other sizes in the range.

The material feels very pleasant to the touch. If you want specifics, the anti-dust mite pillow without zip is made from 99 % polyester and 1 % polyamide 6 — the latter being the nanofibre membrane. The filling is 100 % polyester, specifically UNICO hollow-fibre ball clusters. The pillow is nicely plump, though we understand that won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

One of our key criteria when choosing pillows was certification. The nanoSPACE anti-dust mite pillow holds the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification for material safety. This is an internationally recognised standard that guarantees a textile product has been tested and found to be safe and harmless for human health.

Everyday use

You simply put your own pillowcase on the nanoSPACE anti-dust mite pillow without zip. The pillowcase doesn’t need to be anti-dust mite, because the nanofibre membrane inside the pillow is more than enough to keep dust mites at bay.

As we mentioned, our bed is absolutely packed with pillows. We chose the two-pillow set and use them under our heads, as back supports, and sometimes even toss them onto the sofa in the living room on pyjama days. The pillows in the set measure 40×40 cm, but you can also buy the anti-dust mite pillow without zip in sizes 45×60, 50×50, 50×60, or 50×70 cm.

Effectiveness

The pillow’s effectiveness is backed by testing at the Textile Testing Institute in Brno, the Technical University of Liberec, and the National Institute of Public Health in Prague. Tests confirmed a microorganism capture rate of ≥ 99.0 %, a dust particle capture rate of ≥ 99.9 %, and no negative reactions upon contact with human skin.

As for our own, non-expert opinion: we can say that we’re no longer woken up by sneezing at night, and we don’t wake up with an itchy rash in the morning — something we used to struggle with quite a bit. We should point out, though, that our entire bed is kitted out with anti-dust mite bedding, including the mattress.

Maintenance

The nanoSPACE anti-dust mite pillow without zip should be washed without fabric softener at 40 °C — or at 60 °C in acute cases. The most important thing is to use a washing powder or gel that contains no chlorine or phosphorus.

The manufacturer also advises against tumble drying, even on a low setting, as it could damage the nanofibre membrane.

Other than that, maintenance is very easy — the anti-dust mite pillow only needs to be washed once or twice a year at most.
