Have you discovered that the culprit behind your constant runny nose isn’t a virus or bacteria, but pesky little dust mites? Then you’ve probably also found out that anti-dust mite bedding can be the solution. We got ourselves an anti-dust mite pillow with a zip from the Czech company nanoSPACE to see whether it would actually help with our allergic rhinitis. Read on for our full review — it might help you too.

What Pillow for Allergy Sufferers?
Not everyone is bothered by dust mites, but those who struggle with a dust mite allergy need to take decisive action — and that means replacing the bedding they sleep on. Over two years, a standard pillow accumulates dust mites, their droppings, and dead bodies, which can make up as much as 10% of the pillow’s weight. No wonder sensitive individuals suffer.
When choosing a pillow for allergy sufferers, there are several factors to consider:
- Material – The pillow’s material should prevent dust mites from multiplying. Pillows with a nanofibre membrane are the most effective.
- Filling – The filling material and its maintenance also matter. The label “hypoallergenic” doesn’t necessarily mean the pillow will protect you from dust mites. Hypoallergenic pillows are primarily a solution for people allergic to feathers, as they replace down filling with polyester ball fibre. However, dust mites can still get into many ball-fibre fillings and happily live there.
- Adjustable filling – If a pillow has a zip, you can adjust the amount of filling to suit your needs and maintain it more easily.

How Does an Anti-Dust Mite Pillow with a Zip Work?
The surface of an allergy pillow contains a nanofibre membrane. It acts as a filter, preventing dust mites and allergens from penetrating the pillow’s filling. The membrane is woven from extremely fine fibres measuring just a few tens of nanometres across — far too small to see with the naked eye.
With pore sizes of 80 to 150 nm, the membrane is completely impenetrable to dust mites, which measure around 420,000 nm. Dust mite droppings range from 1,000 nm to 20,000 nm, so the membrane blocks those too. For comparison, the gaps in a standard pillow fabric are several tens of micrometres wide — more than enough to roll out the welcome mat for mites.

Review: Anti-Dust Mite Pillow with Zip for Allergy Sufferers by nanoSPACE
Let’s move from theory to practice. We ordered the anti-dust mite pillow with zip for allergy sufferers from nanoSPACE to find out whether the nanofibre membrane really lives up to its promise.
Packaging
The pillow arrived well packaged in a recyclable box. Inside, the anti-dust mite pillow with zip was further wrapped in a protective zippered bag. We’d recommend keeping this bag — it could come in handy later. The package also included information about how the product works and care instructions.

Certification
The pillow’s material holds the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification for material safety. Before this standard is awarded, the product is tested for harmful substances and chemicals that could have a negative impact on human health.
The OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification guarantees that the textile product meets strict criteria and contains no harmful substances in harmful concentrations. Products carrying this certificate are not only safe but also environmentally friendly.

Quality
We chose the 70×90 cm pillow, which is quilted on both sides. This means the filling distributes evenly and doesn’t bunch up on one side, no matter what sleeping position you prefer. The dimensions fit our pillowcases perfectly. NanoSPACE promises breathable material, and we can confirm this — even when we sweat at night, the pillow doesn’t feel damp. The pillow is also very pleasant to the touch, but that’s really just the icing on the cake, something you’ll notice when putting on the pillowcase.

Performance
After unboxing, we put a pillowcase on and tried it straight away. The difference was noticeable after the very first night. We weren’t woken up by constant sneezing, and our tissues stayed dry come morning. At first, we wondered if it was just a placebo effect — maybe we were simply hoping that something would finally work. But since nighttime sneezing hasn’t bothered us since, it wasn’t wishful thinking at all. The anti-dust mite pillow with zip for allergy sufferers from nanoSPACE genuinely works, and we wholeheartedly recommend it.

How to Wash an Anti-Dust Mite Pillow with Zip
You can wash the anti-dust mite pillow before first use, but it’s not necessary. The pillow only needs washing once a year, so apart from putting on a pillowcase, there’s virtually no maintenance required. Wash it without fabric softener and use a detergent that contains neither chlorine nor phosphorus.
Set the washing machine to 40 °C. You can wash the pillow at 60 °C, but if you want it to last as long as possible, this isn’t recommended. Skip the tumble dryer and let the pillow air dry instead. It will take a while, true — but it’s better to be without your pillow for a short time than to lose it altogether.
