You probably already know that if you want to truly get rid of dust mites in your bed, you need to protect your mattress as well — not just your pillow and duvet. Today we’re reviewing the nanoSPACE dust mite mattress encasement with zip. Why did we buy one when we already had an elasticated mattress cover at home? We’ll share all the details — and more — below.
Why get a dust mite mattress encasement?
Dust mites trigger severe allergic reactions in some people. That’s exactly why anti dust mite bedding was developed. Even if you buy an anti-allergen pillow and duvet, however, you won’t fully get rid of the mites — they simply relocate to the mattress and continue causing problems there. For 100% protection you also need an anti-allergy mattress cover that works the same way as other barrier bedding: it stops dust mites from getting into the mattress and living inside it.

How does the nanoSPACE dust mite mattress encasement with zip work?
The nanoSPACE anti dust mite mattress encasement is a multi-layered textile with a nanofibre membrane inside. It’s this membrane that forms an impenetrable barrier, effectively preventing dust mites from reaching the mattress. Mites that were already living inside before the cover was fitted can’t escape either, and because their food source (dead skin flakes) is cut off and they can’t reproduce, they eventually die.
The Czech manufacturer nanoSPACE offers three types of anti-allergy mattress cover — with a zip, elasticated, and flat sheet style. The zipped encasement is ideal for bunk beds or older mattresses because it wraps around all sides, protecting the mattress from dust mites even from underneath.
Our review of the nanoSPACE dust mite mattress encasement with zip
If you’ve read our review of the elasticated mattress cover, you might be wondering why we went and bought the zipped version too. The answer is simple: the zipped encasement isn’t for our home — it’s for the cottage. We have some really old mattresses there, a proper mismatched collection, and this seemed like the easiest solution.
We get to keep the old — but still perfectly fine — mattresses and protect ourselves from dust mites at the same time. Yes, we proudly belong to the “never throw anything away” camp. 😃
Packaging
The dust mite mattress encasement with zip arrived safely in a sturdy cardboard box decorated with a cobweb motif. It was held closed by a strip of dark blue rigid card that doubled as a label, showing which product and what dimensions we had ordered.
Inside the box, alongside the encasement itself, we found an information leaflet explaining the principle behind nanoSPACE anti dust mite bedding and a nice thank-you note for our purchase.
Material and build quality
The anti dust mite mattress encasement is made from polyester and polyamide. The polyamide forms the nanofibre membrane that provides the protective barrier. The fabric is very pleasant to the touch and soft.
The material also holds OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification for substance safety. This is an internationally recognised standard that verifies and guarantees that the fabrics used in production meet strict requirements and contain no harmful substances or chemicals that could endanger human health or the environment.
We’d also like to highlight the build quality. The seams are nice and strong, nothing is sticking out anywhere, and — crucially — the dimensions match what’s stated. That might sound trivial, but we’ve come across products from other manufacturers where the actual size was way off the description on their website.
And we can’t forget the zip — the very feature that was the main reason for our choice. It’s well sewn on, doesn’t snag anywhere, and the encasement zips and unzips smoothly without any issues.

Everyday use
Following the manufacturer’s instructions, the first thing we did at the cottage was vacuum the mattresses. This removed the dust mites already living inside them. After that, it was simply a matter of fitting the encasement. We’ll admit that if your mattresses are heavy, getting them inside the cover can be a bit of a wrestle.
You still need to put your own fitted sheet over the top. Don’t worry — even with the extra layer, the encasement stays firmly in place, doesn’t bunch up, and the sheet doesn’t slide around on it either. Personally, we wouldn’t even have noticed the extra layer if no one had told us about it — but everyone’s different.
Effectiveness
The dust mite mattress encasement with zip has been tested for microorganism penetration, penetration of dust particles as small as 1 micrometre, skin compatibility, and potential allergic reactions. It passed all the tests successfully, and nanoSPACE guarantees 100% effectiveness at capturing allergens produced by dust mites after 30 wash cycles.
We’d been battling a dust mite allergy for quite a while. Since we started using nanoSPACE anti dust mite bedding, all our symptoms have disappeared — even at the cottage. The dust mite mattress encasement with zip definitely works for us, but as we always stress, it needs to be combined with the rest of the anti dust mite bedding range.

Maintenance
You can use the zipped mattress encasement straight out of the box. Just a reminder: you still need your own fitted sheet on top (it doesn’t have to be anti dust mite). You’ll be pleased to hear that when you change the sheet, there’s no need to remove the encasement. Simply wipe it down with a damp cloth or give it a quick vacuum.
Wash the encasement once a year without fabric softener at 40 °C (in urgent cases you can go up to 60 °C), using a detergent or washing powder free of chlorine and phosphorus. Do not tumble-dry or iron the encasement, as this would significantly reduce its effectiveness. After washing, let it air-dry naturally.
