In every one of our reviews about fighting dust mites, we stress how important it is to encase your entire bed in anti dust mite bedding. We’ve already covered pillows and duvets — now it’s time for the mattress. Read on to find out how we rate the dust mite mattress cover with elastic band for allergy sufferers by nanoSPACE.

Why do allergy sufferers need a dust mite mattress cover?

A dust mite mattress cover is designed to protect allergy sufferers from dust mites and their allergens. Since you can’t throw a mattress in the washing machine and it’s notoriously difficult to clean, it’s no surprise that mattresses harbour the highest concentration of dust mites. Anti dust mite covers are made from a fabric with an extremely fine structure that prevents both mites and their allergens from passing through — in either direction. The result? Not only do allergy symptoms ease, but sleep quality improves too.

How does the nanoSPACE dust mite mattress cover work?

The anti dust mite mattress cover from Czech company nanoSPACE is made using innovative nanotechnology. Specifically, it’s a multi-layered textile with a nanofibre membrane inside. This membrane acts as an impenetrable barrier, effectively stopping dust mites from getting into — or escaping from — the mattress. Without access, mites simply can’t live or breed inside it. At the same time, the nanofabric is 100% breathable and keeps your mattress clean.

nanoSPACE offers its anti-allergy mattress cover in three versions:

Our verdict on the nanoSPACE dust mite mattress cover with elastic

We kitted out the kids’ room with two separate beds (we’re firmly anti-bunk-bed!) and clean underneath them regularly. So you can probably guess which type of anti dust mite mattress cover we chose from nanoSPACE — yes, the elastic band version. We should also admit that our kids’ mattresses aren’t exactly lightweight, so we wanted to make fitting the cover as painless as possible. We’d only go for the zipped version if we had older mattresses, as the manufacturer recommends. So, how happy are we with the elastic cover?

Packaging

We’d love to say something different for a change, but we’re still over the moon with nanoSPACE’s packaging. Those cute spider-web-patterned boxes are starting to pile up at home, but we can’t bring ourselves to throw them out — they’re bound to come in handy for something, right? 😉

And it’s not just the boxes. We really appreciate how neatly the products arrive — well-folded and clearly described. The dust mite mattress cover with elastic came beautifully folded as usual, complete with an information leaflet explaining how the nanomaterial works.

Material quality and stitching

The cover is made from 99.9% polyester (microfibre fabric) and 0.1% polyamide 6 (nanofibre membrane). That probably doesn’t tell you much — it didn’t tell us much either. What’s more reassuring is the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 safety certification.

This certificate guarantees that the product has passed rigorous testing and meets strict ecological criteria and safety requirements for textiles that come into contact with your skin. The material feels pleasantly soft to the touch, so we didn’t give a second thought to the possibility of any skin irritation after making the beds.

As for the construction, the cover matches the stated dimensions perfectly, the seams are strong, and there are no loose threads anywhere. The elastic is nice and firm, yet we had no trouble stretching it over the mattress.

Don’t forget to measure your mattress depth before buying. Most covers are designed for a depth of 20 cm. If your mattress is thicker, the cover obviously won’t fit properly — in that case, it’s better to go with the flat sheet version.

Performance

As you’ve gathered, we bought the dust mite mattress cover with elastic for our children. One of them inherited a dust mite allergy from us. Since we’d already tried nanoSPACE products on ourselves first, we didn’t hesitate to buy two covers — one for the allergic child and one for the non-allergic sibling. That said, if you’re hearing about nanoSPACE for the first time, we’d definitely recommend trying a single product first and expanding from there if you’re happy. We wouldn’t want to push you into anything.

nanoSPACE covers, combined with other anti dust mite bedding, genuinely work. Our son used to wake up frequently during the night with a blocked nose, and in the morning his under-eye bags would be slightly puffy. After his allergist confirmed a dust mite allergy, the doctor showed us a nanoSPACE leaflet with all the key information and a 10% discount (your allergist might have one too).

When a doctor recommends something you’ve already tested yourself, it carries so much more weight. The difference was noticeable after the very first night with anti dust mite bedding. Since then, our son hasn’t had any more problems — and we all breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Care and maintenance

Before putting the cover on, give your mattress a thorough vacuuming to remove as many dust mites as possible that have been living in it. You can use the anti dust mite mattress cover straight out of the box — there’s no need to wash it first. Once the cover is on, you must fit your own regular sheet over it.

When it’s time to wash your sheet, you don’t need to remove the cover underneath. nanoSPACE recommends washing the mattress cover once a year without fabric softener at 40 °C (60 °C if absolutely necessary), using a liquid or powder detergent free of chlorine and phosphorus. After washing, let the cover air dry. Don’t put it in the tumble dryer and don’t iron it.
