Face masks, nano masks, antiviral scarves, replaceable nano filters, or respirators? Which face mask for summer offers the best protection for travel, doctor’s visits, or everyday wear? Which one will keep you coolest when temperatures hit 30°C? And what should you watch out for? How do all these options actually differ? Today we’re answering the most common questions you’ve been asking us.

Nano masks for hot weather

There’s nothing worse than riding a bus without air conditioning while wearing a cotton face mask. Leave those at home — along with disposable surgical masks. Once ordinary surgical masks get damp, they lose their effectiveness entirely.

The most comfortable option overall is a disposable nanofibre mask. Not only does it protect you against viruses, but it’s also extremely thin and breathable. It won’t get damp easily, and you’ll find it much easier to breathe through. We offer two types of nano masks.

The more affordable SpurTex nano mask holds its shape brilliantly, is breathable, and comes in both tie-on and elastic ear-loop versions. It captures 84% of viruses, which corresponds to FFP2 level protection.

Your best bet is a nanofibre mask. Not only does it protect against viruses, but it's also extremely thin and breathable.

Advantages of nano masks

Most economical option: nano filters

If you’re looking for a more affordable alternative, reach for nano filters. You can insert them into homemade cotton face masks, or buy them in a bundle that includes a fabric mask with a filter pocket.

Replaceable nano filters have a proven filtration efficiency of up to 98.68% for capturing microparticles — viruses, bacteria, dust mites, mould spores, smog, and airborne debris. They’re suitable for allergy and asthma sufferers alike.

That said, we don’t particularly recommend nano filters in hot summer weather, because they’re inserted into fabric masks that aren’t as breathable, which can lead to sweating and overheating.

Most comfortable option: antiviral nano scarves

Antiviral nano scarves are an ideal choice for everyday use, especially when you need to keep pulling your face covering on and off throughout the day.

The scarf is washable and contains a nanofibre membrane that protects against flu viruses, bacterial infections, smog, and mould. These multifunctional tube-style neck gaiters with a nanofibre membrane can be worn during a viral pandemic, but they’re also great against smog or pollen.

The scarf is made from Coolmax material, originally designed for clothing worn in extreme temperatures. It wicks away sweat effectively and dries quickly.

For longer bus or train journeys without air conditioning during summer, or time spent in non-air-conditioned spaces, we recommend disposable nano masks instead.

Advantages of nanofibre scarves

Easy to use
Stylish appearance
Coolmax material
Nanofibre membrane — the same type used in FFP3 respirators
• Excellent moisture-wicking and quick-drying
Washable and easy to sterilise

Safest option: FFP3 and ANTI-COVID respirators

Whether you belong to a high-risk group, have a doctor’s appointment coming up, work in healthcare, or simply want to feel safe while travelling abroad, respirators are the clear choice.

We recommend FFP3 respirators or those with the newer certification specifically against COVID (Covid-19 respirator). What matters most with any respirator is a low air-bypass coefficient around the mask — the so-called “FIT FACTOR”. NanoSPACE offers nanofibre respirators from the BreaSAFE brand, which are reusable and rank among the best on the market.

They have no valve — often a weak point on respirators — and thanks to their 3D nanofibre construction, they’re incredibly breathable. A pack of 3 will last one person 4–6 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most comfortable protection for public transport?

If you spend a lot of time on public transport that isn’t well air-conditioned, we recommend nano masks. If you travel on air-conditioned trains, buses, or trams, scarves are a better choice — they’re more economical and easier to use when you don’t need to wear protection outdoors.

What do you recommend if I sweat a lot?

We definitely recommend nano masks — they’re very thin and highly breathable.

I can’t afford disposable nano masks — what are my options?

More economical alternatives, when used correctly, include nano filters, respirators, and scarves. BreaSAFE respirators can be reused for up to 1–2 weeks (working out at 17–35 CZK per day), are very breathable, and offer the best protection of all the options listed above. Nano filters will be less comfortable during summer months if you’re inserting them into cotton masks with a pocket, but they cost around 17 CZK per day. With proper care, a scarf can also be a very economical option. If you wash it daily, it works out to 12.5–25 CZK per day; the scarf will remain functional for 1.5–2 months before tiny micro-cracks start appearing in the membrane and its effectiveness begins to decrease. If you choose to wash it 2–3 times a week and sterilise it by other means on the remaining days, it can stay fully functional for 3–4 months — bringing the cost down to roughly 6 CZK per day.

I belong to a high-risk group and visit the doctor often — what protection do you recommend?

The best protection is undoubtedly offered by BreaSAFE respirators, which seal far better than masks or scarves. If wearing a respirator every day feels uncomfortable, use nano masks for shopping trips and lower-risk environments.
